CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens tied with Occidental with a score of 1-1 on senior night Saturday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the tie, the Sagehens end their season 4-8-4 overall and 2-7-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens put up a strong defensive effort in the first half against the Tigers. With goalie Ethan Bae leading the way, the Sagehens successfully shut down multiple attempts by Occidental, including a crucial save by Bae at the 12 minute mark. The Sagehens created several offensive chances, though struggled to find the net. Toward the end of the half, Kyle Lau had two close attempts: one at the 40 minute mark that struck the left post and another at the 43 minute mark that went wide left. The half ended scoreless.
The intensity on both sides went up in the second half and the Sagehens pushed forward aggressively but had to dig deep to match Occidental's pressure. Occidental struck first at the 77 minute mark however, the Sagehens refused to back down. Just minutes later in the 85th minute, Kieran Veloria scored the equalizer. The Sagehens secured a hard-fought draw to conclude their 2024 season.
Today's match marks Bill Swartz's final game as the head coach of the Sagehens. Swartz is retiring after 37 seasons at Pomona-Pitzer. His career coaching record is 414-278-41.
