CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball opened the 2024-25 campaign with an 85-43 win over Nobel University Monday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Joe Cookson led the Sagehens with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, adding nine boards, a pair of assists and a pair of blocks.
Peyton Mullarkey knocked down a career-high six three-pointers, scoring 18 and adding four rebounds and three assists, while
Samir O'Brien poured in 16 points.
The Sagehens came out of the gate strong, with Cookson and Mullarkey each hitting a pair of three pointers to take a 12-2 lead. Mullarkey knocked down two more threes to extend Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 12, 24-12.
Mullarkey and the Sagehens stayed hot from deep, as Mullarkey hit one more three and O'Brien added a pair of his own to give Pomona-Pitzer a 40-14 advantage. Cookson converted a three-point play as the Sagehens took a 43-18 lead into the locker room. In all, Pomona-Pitzer shot a sizzling 52.9% from distance in the first half, knocking down 9 of its 17 attempts.
The Sagehens kept their foot on the gas in the second half, with
Charlie Hutchinson and Cookson trading three-pointers early. O'Brien scored a trio of baskets in the paint as Pomona-Pitzer took a 62-30 advantage.
Mullarkey hit his sixth three of the night before
Connor Fitzgerald and Cookson traded baskets, pushing the Sagehens' lead, 72-36.
Reagan Cornish added a triple late as Pomona-Pitzer went on to seal the 85-43 victory.
