ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team came away with a five-set victory over SCIAC opponent Chapman on Tuesday night at the Hutton Sports Center.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play.
Paige Mountanos had an incredible game for the Sagehens with 28 kills while
Samantha Grabb earned 17 as well.
Jenny Jenks led the team with 43 assists while
Corrina Benson had 22 digs from the libero position.
Chapman got out to a good start on their home court and took a 7-3 lead out of the gate. The Panthers maintained their lead in the first and hung on to take set one 25-23.
Both teams traded points early in the second set until the Sagehens scored four-straight points to take a 14-9 lead, but the Panthers responded with four straight of their own to make it 14-13. Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer found themselves tied at 22-22, but kills from Mountanos, Grabb and
Chloe Gill sealed the set for the Sagehens to tie the match at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer got ahead again in set three and held a 14-12 lead before a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 18-12. After putting themselves in good position to take a one set lead, the Sagehens held on for the 25-19 win to take a 2-1 lead.
Needing one more set to take the road win, the Sagehens took an 11-4 lead to start the fourth set. The Panthers made e a run and battled back to get within striking distance of the lead at 13-12 and eventually took a 19-18 lead over Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens kept it close tied at 23-23 late in the set, but the Panthers responded and won the set 25-23 to force a fifth set.
Pomona-Pitzer started with the lead in the fifth set up 8-4 at the changeover. Chapman tried to make a comeback cutting the lead down to 12-11, but Pomona-Pitzer rallied with back-to-back gills by Grabb to end the game and give the Sagehens the five-set road win.
