Mountanos leads Sagehens to 3-1 victory over the Poets

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team beat Whittier 3-1 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play.

Paige Mountanos led the way with 18 kills, Jenny Jenks had 41 assists, and Samantha Grabb had five service aces against the Poets.

The Sagehens and the Poets battled back and forth but the Sagehens took control mid-way through the first set due to momentum shifting kills from Chloe Gill. Despite Whittier fighting back, the Sagehens remained composed and Paige Mountanos brought the set to a close with a kill. The Sagehens won the first set 25-22.

In the second set, the Sagehens found themselves in a battle with Whittier. The Sagehens managed to establish an early lead, thanks to Mountanos and Kellan Hayes. Despite the fight, they were unable to shake Whittier. Late in the set, the Sagehenes held on to a close lead at 23-21, but Whittier capitalized on attack errors and finished strong. Whittier came out on top 25-23.

The Sagehens bounced back and gained control from the start of the third set, with a key service ace from Hanna Chen giving them momentum. Whittier tried to lead the Sagehens' offense back, but Charlotte Sekerka and Paige Mountanos were too much for the Poets. At 23-20, an attack error by Whittier and a final service ace from Chen sealed the set for the Sagehens with the score of 25-20, 

In the fourth set, the Sagehens maintained their momentum. They took control with back-to-back service aces from Samantha Grabb, extending their lead to 18-8. The Sagehens defense was strong, as blocks by Charlotte Sekerka and Grabb helped stop Whittier's attempts at closing the gap. The Sagehens claimed the fourth set, 25-12, and secured the match victory.
