CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team bounced back after their 0-2 spell at the D3hoops.com Classic with an 86-59 win over SCIAC opponent Chapman on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play.
The Saehens were led by
Ty Bergman who just missed a double-double with 26 points and nine rebounds.
Joe Cookson did notch a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to go along with seven assists.
Peyton Mullarkey had 15 points hitting on 5-6 from three and
Pete Boyle was the fourth Sagehen in double figures with 13 points in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer shot well against the Panthers connecting on 49.2% from the floor and 42.9% from three. The Sagehens also dominated the paint outrebounding Chapman 47-24 and 28 points in the paint.
A good start to the first half put the Sagehens up 13-2 with good shooting by Bergman, Boyle, and Cookson to force Chapman to burn an early timeout. Pomona-Pitzer kept the lead for the entire first half, but the Panthers got back into striking distance a few times with some good three-point shooting of their own to cut the lead down to 22-18 with just under nine minutes until halftime. Chapman got close again at 35-33 with 2:25 left to play, but the Sagehens ended the half with a 6-3 run to take a 41-33 lead into halftime.
Chapman kept the deficit where it was for the early part of the second half, but the Sagehens blew the game open with a 24-7 run led by 10 points from Bergman and six from Mullarkey to take a commanding 71-42 lead with 7:06 remaining.
After taking a big lead, the Sagehens were able to take their feet off the gas and cruised to a big conference win to start off the new calendar year.
