Sagehens Leave Occidental With Close Road Victory

LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team edged out a tight road win with a 72-67 win over SCIAC opponent Occidental on Wednesday night at Rush Gym.
 
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in SCIAC play.
 
The Sagehens were led by Joe Cookson who finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Ty Bergman ended with 16 points and seven boards while Jasper Hedin also finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Pete Boyle finished off the double-digit scorers for the Sagehens with 12 points in the road win.
 
A good shooting night for both teams in tonight's game as the Sagehens shot 45.8% from the field and 10-32 for 31.3% from three. The Tigers shot 40% from the floor and 30% from three. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a good start in the first half with a 12-4 lead led by seven points from Boyle and five from Cookson to force the Tigers to burn their first timeout of the game with just four minutes gone in the half.
 
The Sagehens extended their lead to above 10 points with a 21-10 lead after a three by Hayden Moser, but Oxy went on a 10-0 run to trail by just one point at 21-20 with 8:10 left until halftime.
 
After letting the Tigers back into the game, the Sagehens stayed on top for the rest of the first half until the final shot as the Tigers hit a three for their final possession to take a 36-35 lead heading into halftime.
 
The lead changed hands a few times in the first few minutes of the second half, but Occidental went on to take their largest lead at 50-45 with five minutes gone in the second half.  The Sagehens got back control of the lead with a 14-7 run to take a 59-54 lead with 8:45 remaining. Pomona-Pitzer stayed on top, but Oxy made it interesting as they closed the gap late and trailed the Sagehens 67-65 with 2:57 to play. Cookson and Peyton Mullarkey scored some crucial late points as the Sagehens survived on the road for their sixth SCIAC win of the season.
