CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team fell to Southwestern (Tx.) 3-1 in their first game on Saturday but capped off the night with a sweep over No. 25 Wisconsin Eau Claire to end the Pacific Coast Classic.
Samantha Grabb and
Chloe Gill recorded 13 and 12 kills against the Pirates while Gill and
Paige Mountanos led the team with seven kills against the Blugolds.
Corrina Benson recorded 20 digs against Southwestern and another 12 against Wis.- Eau Claire with Wilson also recording 12 digs of her own. The Sagehens are now 2-2 overall and will be back in action on Sept. 8 when they take on UC Santa Cruz.

The Sagehens fell behind early in set one as the Pirates went on a 6-2 run. The Sagehens managed to tie things at 7-7 with kills from
Kellan Hayes and
Chloe Gill along with a block from
Tene Ariyo. The set was played back and forth with neither team falling behind more than three points until the Pirates recorded a service ace to take a 22-18 lead. Pomona-Pitzer pulled within two at 23-21 after kills from
Paige Wilson and
Samantha Grabb but back-to-back attacking errors gave the Pirates set one 25-21.
The two teams worked to a quick 6-6 tie in set two before the Sagehens scored eight unanswered points to take a 14-6 lead. The Pirates tried to gain momentum with two points, but a service error and two
Paige Wilson kills extended the Sagehens lead to 17-8. Southwestern responded with a 4-1 run but the Sagehens earned a 7-6 edge down the stretch to take set two 25-18.
The Pirates contained the Sagehens attack in set three, allowing just seven kills while the Sagehens recorded seven errors in the set. The Pirates swung at a .222 and .268 hitting percentage in set three and four, taking the sets 25-13 and 25-23 to win the match. In set four, the Sagehens nearly forced a fifth set after trailing 24-21 with
Paige Wilson recording a kill followed by a service ace to set the score at 24-23. The Pirates were able to hold off the late pressure and escape a five set match.

The Blugolds held the early advantage in set one as they worked their way to a 12-9 lead, but the Sagehens went on a 5-0 run with kills from
Paige Mountanos and
Kellan Hayes to regain the lead at 14-12. The Blugolds quickly evened things at 14-14 but a 4-2 run put the Sagehens back on top 18-16. From there, the Sagehens used blocks from
Tene Ariyo,
Samantha Grabb, and
Paige Mountanos to go on a 4-1 run but Wis.- Eau Claire rallied back with four-straight points to cut the lead to 22-21. The two teams went back and forth from there, but
Chloe Gill delivered the final kill to take set one 25-23.
The Sagehens carried the momentum straight into set two, starting the set on a 3-0 run. The Blugolds quickly regrouped to tie it at 3-3 but the Sagehens charged forward with an 8-1 run that featured kills from Gill and Grabb and four attacking errors on Wis.- Eau Claire. A 5-2 run from the Blugolds pulled them within four at 13-9 but a 5-1 burst from Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead to 18-10. The Sagehens were able to outscore the Blugolds 7-5 to take set two 25-15, using kills from Hayes and an ace from
Eleanor Nicholson to go up 2-0 in the match.
Paige Mountanos recorded two kills to start the third set with both assists coming from
Kylie Mies. The Sagehens extended their lead to 6-3 but the Blugolds quickly rallied back to tie things at 6-6. The Sagehens regained the lead at 10-8 but three unanswered points from the Blugolds put them on top 11-10. The lead was short-lived as the Sagehens used kills from Mountanos and Gill to go on a 6-2 run which also included another
Paige Wilson ace. Pomona-Pitzer continued to play well, extending their lead to 21-16 before Wilson, Ariyo, and
Eleanor Nicholson all recorded kills to complete the sweep with a 25-20 set three win.
