Sagehens Fall To Cal And USC At Triton Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo dropped a pair of games to start their 2023 Triton Invitational with a 19-6 loss against Cal and a 21-2 loss to USC on Saturday afternoon at Triton Pool.

Cal jumped ahead early on Pomona-Pitzer after a 4-0 lead in the first. The Sagehens got on the board first as Andrew Plaschke netted the first goal for the Sagehens in 2023. Miles Chiang and Conrad Hugar also scored in the first period to net their first goals of 2023, but Cal led 6-3 after the first.
 
Pomona-Pitzer hung around the Division I powerhouse in the first half and scored two more goals in the second from Jacob Whiting and Zach Whitfield to trail Cal 10-5 heading into halftime.
 
A low-scoring third quarter with the Sagehens holding the Bears to three goals coming out of halftime, but the Sagehens only added one goal from Chase Barman to trail 13-6 heading into the fourth.
 
Cal took over in the fourth and added six more goals to win game one of the Triton Invitation over Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens had two goals against Southern California as Indigo Lee and Zach Whitfield found the back of the net against the Trojans in the loss.
 
USC got ahead early and stretched it into a big advantage with a 7-0 first quarter.  The Trojans went on to shut the Sagehens out in the first half while they added five more goals in the second to take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
 
The Sagehens scored back-to-back goals to open the third as Lee and Whitfield earned goals against the Trojan defense, but USC went on to add nine unanswered to finish out the game and hand the Sagehens their second loss in the Triton Invitational.
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will next face Cal State Fullerton at 9:15 a.m. and Long Beach State at 1:15 p.m. to close out the Triton Invitational.
