SAN ANTONIO, Tx. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-8) loss to the Southwestern Pirates on Saturday morning. The Sagehens will be back in action later this afternoon to take on Franklin and Marshall to close out the Trinity Fall Classic.
How It Happened
The Sagehens fell behind early in set one as the Pirates opened the match on a 12-3 run. Southwestern extended their lead to 17-7 before
Kylie Mies brought an end to the run with a service ace. A
Kellan Hayes kill and Pirates attacking error brought the score to 18-10. The Sagehens managed to outscore the Pirates 8-7 down the stretch, but the comeback was too late as Southwestern took the opening set 25-18.
Set two featured a closer opening battle with the Sagehens battling to a 4-4 tie but the Pirates pushed forward with a 7-3 run to take the lead at 11-7. Pomona-Pitzer stayed in the set, fighting their way to a 15-15 tie with kills from
Samantha Grabb,
Paige Wilson, and
Paige Mountanos. The set stayed even as the two teams traded attacks en route to an 18-18 tie but the Pirates pulled away in the final moments with a 7-1 run to take set two 25-19.
Southwestern started the third set on a 14-4 run and continued the heavy pressure, navigating to a 20-5 lead. The Sagehens struggled to gain momentum in the third set as Southwestern outscored Pomona-Pitzer 5-3 to take the third set 25-8 and defeat the Sagehens 3-0.
