Box Score WHITTIER, CA. – The No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team came away with a 1-0 road win against Whittier to open SCIAC play on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-0 to start the year and 1-0 in SCIAC play.
Kelsey Shintaku scored the only goal of the game for her second goal of the season off of an assist from Ella Endo. Patricia DePalma got the start in goal for the Sagehens and earned her second shutout and third win of the season with 10 saves.
Whittier outshot the Sagehens 15-10 throughout the entire 90 minutes while the Poets amassed four corners to Pomona-Pitzer's one.
The Sagehens got the first score of the game in the 28th minute after a turnover by the Whittier defense fell to the feet of Endo who darted through the midfielder and got a good shot on goal that was saved and bounced straight to the feet of Shintaku for the tap in to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
The Poets had an opportunity to get a good chance at goal in the final seconds of the first half but couldn't find a good cross into the box as the Sagehens went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens controlled possession for the majority of the game, but Whittier threatened in the second half as they tried to find an equalizer at home. The Poets outshot the Sagehens 6-4 in the second half and forced DePalma and the Sagehen backline to clear some dangerous opportunities off of set pieces.
Despite the second half surge from the Whittier offense, the Sagehens were able to hold off the Poets in the second half and came away with a road win in their SCIAC opener.
