Box Score LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team dropped their road contest against Occidental 61-57 on Wednesday night at Rush Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 6-14 overall and 4-9 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Emily Church who has a season-high 19 points in the loss. Two other Sagehens hit the double-digit mark as Madison Quan and Emily Lee had 10 while Kaitlyn Leung chipped in with eight.
Pomona-Pitzer hit on 42.4% of its shots from the field with Occidental converting just 30.9% of its shots. Oxy had a slight advantage from three at 20% to the Sagehens' 19% but the tiger dominated the boards after they outrebounded Pomona-Pitzer 59-26 with 17 second-chance points.
The Sagehens got in a hole early after the Tigers jumped out to an 8-3 start, but that deficit was quickly erased after Church and Quan put the Sagehens on top 11-8. The Sagehens kept their narrow lead for the remainder of the quarter and led 16-14 at the end of the first.
Pomona-Pitzer went up by as many as nine points in the second quarter after a Quan layup made it 29-20 with just under five minutes left before halftime. Occidental sparked a small run to get the lead down to three for the Sagehens, but Quan and Emily Lee netted late buckets to give Pomona-Pitzer a 33-26 lead at halftime.
Occidental came out of halftime and got back within striking distance after they trailed one point at 33-32 with 7:14 left in the third, but the Sagehens regrouped and ended the quarter on a high note to hold an eight-point lead at 44-36 heading into the fourth.
The Tigers chipped away at the lead during the early stages of the fourth quarter and the Sagehens and tigers found themselves all even at 48-48 with 4:06 to play. The Tiger took the lead as the Pomona-Pitzer offense struggled to answer back and then forced the Sagehens to foul to try to mount a late comeback. Occidental was good enough from the free-throw line to hold off the Sagehens late and handed the Sagehens the tough loss on the road.
