Box Score LA VERNE, CA. – Senior Madison Quan broke the single-game points record with 41 points in the Sagehens huge 88-84 win over No.23 La Verne on Saturday afternoon at the Tents.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens break their three-game skid and improve to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Quan who put on a performance for the record books with a program record 41 points in the win. Quan previously tied for most points in the game with her previous career-high of 38 in the 2019-20 season at Redlands. Kaitlyn Leung put together a nice game with 18 points while Emily Church tallied 13 and Kellie Au with nine.
Pomona-Pitzer shot 49.2% from the field and 44% from three including a whopping 92% from the free throw line hitting on 13-14 shots. Rebounds were nearly identical with the Sagehens holding a slight advantage at 39-38 but dominated in the paint with 34 points to La Verne's 22.
Pomona-Pitzer fell behind early on after La Verne started the game on an 8-1 run with four minutes gone in the first quarter. The Leopards extended their lead to 13 points in the first quarter at 21-8, but the Sagehens fought back late to cut it down to 26-16.
The Sagehens had a big second quarter after they outscored La Verne 27-19. La Verne kept its lead intact early in the second quarter, but the Sagehens came roaring back midway through the second with a barrage of threes by Quan and Leung. Pomona-Pitzer got the lead down to 41-38 with 1:32 left before halftime and got the final bucket of the half by Au to make it 45-43 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens came out of halftime and immediately tied the game at 47-47 with a layup by Leung and took their first lead of the game after a layup by Quan at 49-47. The Sagehens went up by as many as seven in the third at 58-51, but La Verne kept it close towards the end of the third and the Sagehens went into the fourth quarter with a 67-64 lead.
La Verne came back and reclaimed its lead early in the fourth and forced the Sagehens to call a timeout up five points at 72-67 with 6:41 to play. The Sagehens and Quan went to work after a three fell and a layup by Church to tie the game back up at 72-72. The two teams went back and forth but the Sagehens got on top and stayed on top after a three by Leung made it 82-80 with 1:40 to go. La Verne kept it close late but was then forced to foul where the Sagehens stayed solid at the line and left La Verne with the upset victory.
