89th Minute PK By Deutz Sends Sagehens To SCIAC Tournament Championship

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team punched their ticket to the SCIAC Tournament Championship with a 2-1 win over CMS on Thursday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 14-0-3 overall and advanced to the SCIAC Tournament Championship where they await the winner of Cal Lutheran and Chapman.

The Sagehens had two different goal scorers as Hannah Hong scored off of an assist from Anjali Nuggehalli and Spencer Deutz also scored the game-winner off of a penalty kick.

An intense Sixth Street Rivalry in the SCIAC Semifinals between CMS and Pomona-Pitzer after the regular season meeting ended in a 0-0 draw. Pomona-Pitzer had a slight advantage in shots 7-6 while both teams earned two corners on the day.

CMS pressed out of the gate early to find the first goal of the day, but the Sagehen defense settled in and only allowed one CMS shot in the first half. Once the Sagehens eased into the game, the offense took over and started to create chances in the CMS defensive third.  However, it was an absolute belter of a shot by Hong from way outside the box to put the Sagehens up 1-0 in the 29th minute.

Pomona-Pitzer took a 1-0 lead into halftime and seemed content with their one-goal lead as they just maintained possession and played a lot of defense in the second half.  CMS pushed forward as time went on needing a goal to send the game into overtime and found their chance in the 81st minute as Riley Zitar beat DePalma with a deep, looping effort that found the side netting to even the game at 1-1 with just 10 minutes to play.

After almost certainly sending the game into extra time with a goal late into the second half, the Sagehens had different ideas as they started to press forward to find a late winner. Fortunately for the Sagehens, a loose arm in the box stopped a shot by Deutz as the Sagehens were awarded a penalty in the 89th minute of the SCIAC Semifinals.

Deutz took the ball to the spot and slotted it past the keeper and ran straight to the supporters' section as the Sagehens punched their ticket to the SCIAC Tournament Championship.

Up Next: Depending on the results of Cal Lutheran vs Chapman, the Sagehens will either host Chapman at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4th or head to Cal Lutheran at 12:00 p.m.
