Pomona-Pitzer Wins Home Opener Of Concordia Chicago 61-58

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came away with a 61-58 win in their home opener against Concordia University of Chicago on Friday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
 
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens earned their first win of the season to improve to 1-2 overall.
 
The Sagehens were led by the dup of Jadyn Lee and Emily Lee who combined for 31 points on the night. Jadyn Lee went for 16 points and five assists while Emily Lee had 15 points and five rebounds. Katie Drais came off the bench for nine points all via the three-pointer while Ali Bennett tacked on eight points and Kellie Au with six points and 11 rebounds.
 
A very close match between the Cougars and Sagehens in Pomona-Pitzer's home opener with the Sagehens outshooting the Cougars from the floor 41.1% to 30.6% and the Sagehens hitting on 38.5% of their three's to Concordia's 25%. The Cougars had the advantage on the boards with 38 rebounds to the Sagehens' 33, but Pomona-Pitzer had 13 points off of turnovers with Concordia only coming away with five.
 
A low-scoring first quarter started the contest with both teams scoring game-lows in the first 10 minutes. The Sagehens started with a small lead and kept their lead at 11-9 heading into the second quarter.
 
Concordia took over the lead in the second at 23-22 and proceeded to go on an 11-4 run to end the first half and held a 34-26 lead over the Sagehens heading into the locker room.
 
Pomona-Pitzer came out hot on offense to start the second half with a 17-6 run hitting on 7-12 shots to take a 43-37 lead with 3:31 to play in the third, but Concordia regrouped and erased the Sagehens' lead with a mini-run of their own to tie the game at 46-46. Pomona-Pitzer was able to come away with the lead heading into the fourth after an Emily Lee layup gave them a 48-47 lead.
 
The game stayed within five points throughout the entire fourth quarter with both teams looking to pull away to put the game to rest. The Sagehens found themselves down 55-50 with 6:30 left to play, but Jadyn Lee scored five of the Sagehens' seven points to tie the game at 57-57 with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter.  Emily Lee got the Sagehens the lead late with a driving layup to make it 59-58 and then a great second effort by Au off of an offensive rebound made it 61-58 with just 25 seconds remaining.  The Sagehen defense was able to close out on the Concordia shooters for the final shot and Pomona-Pitzer came away with a close win for their first victory of 2023.
