Sagehens Take Care Of Stanton With 27-Point Victory At Home

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated Stanton University 82-55 on Thursday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
 
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens start the year 2-0 overall.
 
The Sagehens had four players in double figures. Leading the way was Joe Cookson with a double-double at 21 points and 10 rebounds. Pete Boyle tallied 18 points, Ty Bergman went for 16 points and eight rebounds while Jasper Hedin ended with 13 points in the win.
 
Pomona-Pitzer dominated in their second game out in 2023 against the Elks after they won the turnover battle 18-11, shot 49.2% from the floor, and outscored Stanton 40-28 inside the paint.
 
Stanton took the lead early on after they came out in the first half with some hot shooting from beyond the arc to give them an 11-4 lead with only three minutes gone. The Sagehens quickly erased their deficit with an 8-0 run to take a 12-11 lead after a Hedin layup and continued to hold their lead at 19-17 with 10 minutes remaining until halftime.
 
Pomona-Pitzer made a strong run toward the end of the first half outscoring the Elks 13-0 during a six-minute stretch and went into halftime with a 38-22 lead.
 
It was more of the same for the Sagehens in the second half after they went up over 20 on Stanton at 48-26 after a Boyle three and took their largest lead of the game at 30 points with a 79-49 lead with just under four minutes remaining.
 
After taking such a large lead in the early stages of the second half, the Sagehens were able to ride out their advantage and come away with a big win at home early in the season.
