CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team dropped the No. 19 La Verne Leopards 3-1 (25-14, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23).
Paige Mountanos led the attack with 12 kills while
Chloe Gill and
Paige Wilson both recorded nine kills.
Kellan Hayes ended the night with 10 total blocks.
Corrina Benson and
Paige Wilson ended the night with 19 and 18 digs, respectively.
Savanna Cespedes led the setters with 18 assists. Pomona-Pitzer will be back on the court on Oct. 10 when they travel to Cal Lutheran at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens were electric in the first set, starting the game on a 10-2 run that saw kills from
Paige Mountanos,
Chloe Gill,
Charlotte Sekerka, and
Samantha Grabb. The Sagehens continued to charge forward with a 7-4 run to take a convincing 17-6 lead. From there the Leopards went on a 4-1 run to reach the 10 point mark but another 7-4 run from Pomona-Pitzer gave the Sagehens the first set 25-14.
The Sagehens started set two on a 4-1 run, but the Leopards kept things much closer in this set with Pomona-Pitzer working to a slight 9-5 advantage. The Leopards pulled within two at 10-8 but the Sagehens utilized a 7-1 run to take extend their lead to 17-9 with kills from Mountanos and
Paige Wilson. La Verne quickly responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 17-16 but Pomona-Pitzer had a 6-0 run ready to go to take a 23-16 lead. La Verne scored twice more but kill from Gill and an attacking error gave the Sagehens the 25-18 set two victory.
La Verne jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in set three before a 4-0 run from Pomona-Pitzer brought the run to an end. The Leopards were relentless on attack, extending their lead to 17-9 before the Sagehens answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 17-14. The Sagehens stayed closed
Kellan Hayes and
Paige Mountanos recorded kills to cut the gap to 19-17. La Verne was able to avoid the sweep with a 6-3 run to take set three 25-20.
Set four proved to be a battle as the two teams worked to a 5-5 lead before the Sagehens briefly took an 8-5 lead. The Leopards quickly responded to tie things at 10-10 before pulling ahead to 14-10. Pomona-Pitzer went on a 4-0 run with blocks from Wilson, Hayes, and Mountanos to tie the set at 14-14. After La Verne briefly regained the lead at 15-14, the Sagehens used a 3-0 run to go back on top at 17-15. The two teams continued to battle back and forth with La Verne taking an 18-17 lead with a 3-0 run before Pomona-Pitzer used a 4-0 run to regain the lead at 21-18. La Verne put the pressure on late with a 5-1 run to take a 23-22 lead but a service error, bad set, and kill from
Paige Wilson capped off the 25-23 set win to give Pomona-Pitzer the 3-1 victory over the No. 19 La Verne Leopards.
