CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team defeated the Redlands Bulldogs 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 26-28, 25-20) with
Paige Mountanos (13),
Kellan Hayes (11),
Chloe Gill (10), and
Paige Wilson (10) all recording double-digit kills on the night.
Savanna Cespedes led the team with 16 assists on the night while
Corrina Benson recorded 22 digs with Wilson following closely behind with 14.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs started the night on a 7-2 run, but the Sagehens countered with a 7-3 run to cut the deficit to 10-9. After two points from the Bulldogs, the Sagehens took a 13-12 lead with a 4-0 run with kills from Wilson and Gill as well as a block from Mountanos and Hayes. Redlands countered with a 3-0 run to take the lead at 15-13 but it was short lived as the Sagehens earned six straight points to regain the lead at 19-15. The two teams traded attacks with Redlands cutting the Sagehen lead to 21-19 but a 4-0 run from Pomona-Pitzer gave the Sagehens a 25-19 win in set one.
Redlands got off to another quick start in set two with a 6-1 run. The Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to 10-4 to force a Sagehen timeout. From there, the Sagehens used a 10-1 run to take a 14-11 lead, using kills from Mountanos, Gill, Wilson, along with a service ace from
Emily Bunnell. Redlands managed to tie the set at 16-16 but the Sagehens outscored the Bulldogs 9-6 down the stretch to take set two 25-22.
The Sagehens had a better start in set three with both teams trading attacks early to work to an 8-8 tie. The Bulldogs surged forward with a 7-0 run to take the lead at 15-8 before extending their lead to 20-14. The Sagehens picked things up late, using a 9-2 run to take a 23-22 advantage over the Bulldogs with kills from Mountanos, Hayes, Wilson, and
Tene Ariyo. The Bulldogs were able to counter and regain the lead at 25-24 with a 3-1 run but the Sagehens answered with
Paige Mountanos recording a kill and a solo block to put Pomona-Pitzer back on top 26-25. The Bulldogs managed to take the next three points to win set three 28-26 and force a fourth set.
Redlands started the fourth set on a 4-2 run, but the Sagehens took the next four points to take a 6-4 lead. After a brief tie at 6-6, the Sagehens went on another 10-1 run, using kills from
Samantha Grabb, Wilson, and Hayes to take a 16-7 lead. Redlands responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 17-12 and later cut it to 19-15 after a short 3-0 burst. A 5-1 run put the Sagehens up 24-16 with Mountanos, Gill, and
Charlotte Sekerka all recording kills. The Bulldogs tried to force a comeback, recording four straight points to cut the Sagehen lead to 24-20 but a late attack error gave the Sagehens a 25-20 set four victory to seal the match 3-1.
