Box Score 2 CAMBRIDGE, MA. - -The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team split in day one of the Harvard Invitational with a 12-11 win over MIT and a 17-10 loss against No. 14 Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Blodgett Pool.
Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 6-13 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 12, MIT 11
The Sagehens were led by
Zach Whitfield who netted a game-high five goals in the win.
Indigo Lee also netted a hat-trick with three goals and
Chase Barman with a multi-goal game as well with two.
Kyle Green and
Conrad Hugar came through with one goal each as well.
The Sagehens got out to a good start in the first after they outscored MIT 3-2. Hugar got the scoring going in the first to get the Sagehens out to a 1-0 lead before MIT netted back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead with 5:15 left in the first. Pomona-Pitzer fired back with the final two goals of the first and after Green and Lee scored, the Sagehens took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
MIT controlled the second quarter with four goals to Pomona-Pitzer's two. The Sagehens found the back of the net off of goals from Barman and Whitfield with MIT holding a 6-5 lead into halftime.
The Sagehens came back strong out of halftime with a game-high five goals in the third. Lee and Whitfield scored goals early and came back with back-to-back goals again before Barman netted a goal to end the third with the Sagehens taking over the lead at 10-9.
After taking a slight lead into the fourth, the Sagehens tried to stay even with MIT in the fourth. The Engineers tied the game early in the fourth, but the Sagehens battled back with a goal from Whitfield to go up 11-10 with 4:42 to play. MIT tied the game again with just over three minutes left, but Whitfield came back again with the game-winner in the fourth to push the Sagehens over MIT to open the Harvard Invitational.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Harvard 17
The Sagehens were led by Green and Whitfield who each had two goals in the loss.
Julian Montoya, Barman, Hugar, Lucas Schoenwald, and
Jack Ryan had one goal apiece as well.
The Sagehens scored the first goal of the game from Whitfield before the Crimson scored back-to-back goals to take the lead from the Sagehens in the first. Hugar found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2, but Harvard scored the final two goals of the first to take a 4-2 lead.
Harvard opened the second with a goal, but the Sagehens came back with three straight goals to tie the game at 5-5. Harvard was able to get a powerplay towards the end of the first half and converted a goal to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.
Whitfield got the Sagehens even again to start the second half while Ryan and Barman answered after Harvard's goals to keep the deficit at one goal at 9-8 midway through the third. The Crimson took off on offense towards the end of the third after they ended the period with four unanswered goals to take a 13-8 lead into the fourth.
Harvard opened the gap to 16-8 in the fourth before the Sagehens got back on track with goals from Montoya and Schoenwalvd, but the Crimson were able to hold off the Sagehens late in the game to hand the Sagehens their first loss of the Harvard Invitational.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to Brown tomorrow as they Brown at 9:30 a.m. and Connecticut College at 12:30 p.m.
