Sagehens Fall to Athenas in Road Rivalry Contest

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team fell to the CMS Athenas 68-59 on the road on Saturday night. The Sagehens were up 30-27 at the half and held a 43-42 lead over CMS after the third quarter but the Athenas outscored Pomona-Pitzer 26-16 in the final quarter to defeat the Sagehens. Madison Quan led all scorers with 21 points while Emily Lee recorded 16 points. The Sagehens are now 5-10 on the season and 3-6 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when they host UC Santa Cruz at 1:00 p.m.

Pomona-Pitzer soared through the first quarter, starting the game on a 7-2 run before Kellie Au hit a three to put the Sagehens up 10-4. The Sagehens continued to pile it on, ending the quarter on a 10-6 run with buckets from Emily Church and Madison Quan. CMS closed the gap with a 6-0 run to start the second quarter but the Sagehens responded with a 10-2 run to force a CMS timeout and extend their lead to 30-18 with 2:46 left in the half. The Athenas were able to end the half on a 9-0 run to cut the Sagehens lead to 30-27. 

Out of the break, the Athenas quickly tied the game with a shot from downtown but Emily Lee responded promptly with one of her own to keep the Sagehens on top 33-30. Madison Quan made two free throws to make it 35-30 but CMS went on a 7-0 run to briefly take the lead at 37-35 before Maison Yee hit a three-pointer with 4:50 left in the third. The two teams traded even buckets down the stretch, with the Sagehens holding a slight 43-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

The Athenas started the fourth quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 50-44 lead over Pomona-Pitzer. Quan made a three to cut the lead to 50-47 and later hit another shot from downtown to tie the game at 52-52 with 5:32 left to play. CMS went on a short 5-0 run that was ended by a Katie Drais three to keep the Sagehens within two points at 57-55. Madison Quan hit a jumper to tie the game at 57-57 but CMS ended the game on an 11-2 run to defeat Pomona-Pitzer 68-59.
