Sagehens Fall to Beavers in SCIAC Road Contest

PASADENA, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team fell to the Caltech Beavers 61-53 in a conference road match, dropping to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in the conference. As a team, the Sagehens shot 38.9% from the field and 28.0% from three-point range. Emily Church led the team with a season-high 18 points while Katie Drais ended the night with 13 points. The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to CMS at 2:00 p.m.

The Sagehens recorded the first bucket as Emily Lee hit a jumper before the team made their way to a slight 9-7 lead. The Beavers took their first lead of the night at 11-9 with a layup before extending the lead to 15-11 with back-to-back jumpers. Emily Church responded with her own 4-0 run to tie the game at 15-15 heading into the second quarter. Church added two more points to her run at the start of the second to make it 17-15 before hitting a jumper just over a minute later to keep the Sagehens on top 19-17. Maison Yee extended the Sagehens lead with a three-pointer to make it 22-17. The Sagehens continued to hold the lead as Kellia Au, Maison Yee, and Emily Church all recorded baskets, working their way to a 27-23 lead. The Beavers were able to answer back with an 11-0 run to take a 34-27 lead going into halftime.  

Katie Drais hit a three-pointer 53 seconds into the second half to cut the deficit to four points at 34-30 and later cut the deficit to 36-33 with another three-point shot. Caltech was able to score eight unanswered points to push their lead to 44-33 with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter. Emily Church recorded the next four points for Pomona-Pitzer with two free throws and a jumper, but Caltech continued to hold off the Sagehens with a three-pointer, taking a 47-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Sagehens got started quickly in the fourth as Church recorded a layup 19 seconds into the quarter before Madison Quan knocked down a shot from downtown 53 seconds into the fourth, cutting the Beavers lead to 47-42. Caltech countered, taking three shots on the other end, grabbing three offensive boards before making a layup to make it 49-42. Emily Lee was able to knock down a three of her own to pull the Sagehens within four at 49-45 but a 9-2 Caltech run forced a Sagehen timeout, trailing 58-47. The Sagehens were able to record six more points down the stretch but they weren't enough as the Beavers won the game 61-53.
