Box Score REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team won a thriller in Redlands as the Sagehens won a shootout 4-3 over SCIAC opponent Redlands on Wednesday night at Farquhar Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens get their first win over Redlands since 2018 and improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Niclas Ulrich who netted the game-tying and game-winning goals for the Sagehens in the win. Matthew Carlson had a goal and two assists while Sean Donovan also netted a goal in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer hit the road and got a big win against a top team in the SCIAC in a game where they desperately needed a spark from their offense. The Sagehens scored four goals against Bulldogs on the road off of 14 shots and registered nine corner kicks.
Redlands came out and scored the first goal of the game in the first few opening minutes to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Sagehens and Carlson responded immediately after a beautiful curler off the foot of Carlson hit the corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the 10th minute.
The Sagehens went on to take the lead after Carlson played a ball into Donovan and a hard shot on goal went straight through the hands of the keeper and into the back of the net to put the Sagehens on top 2-1 in the 35th minute. The Bulldogs were able to even the score at 2-2 just before halftime after a ball bounced off the hands of the Pomona-Pitzer goalie and a one-time shot by Redlands evened the game at 2-2 heading into halftime.
Redlands scored a go-ahead goal in the 59th minute after another ball off of the Sagehens' goalie bounced straight to a Redlands attacker and an easy shot on an empty net made it 3-2 Bulldogs.
Pomona-Pitzer kept firing on offense and after a corner attempt was cleared back to Carlson, a cross to the back post found an unmarked Ulrich who headed the ball into the far corner to tie the game at 3-3in the 67th minute. Ulrich would then go on and score the game-winner in the 79th minute after a bad clear by the Redlands backline fell straight to the feet of Ulrich who slotted it into the corner to put the Sagehens up 4-3 with 11 minutes to play. The Sagehens went on and sent away any chance of Redlands to salvage a draw in the final minutes of the game as Pomona-Pitzer claimed a big road win over the Bulldogs.
