Early Goal from Mandell Lifts Sagehens Past Beavers in Conference Road Match

Box Score

PASADENA, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's soccer team defeated the Caltech Beavers 1-0 on the road with a first half goal from Hannah Mandell on Saturday morning. The Sagehens outshot the Beavers 20-2 with 12 shots on goal. The Sagehens also earned an 8-0 advantage in corners against Caltech, dominating the attacking third for much of the contest. With the win, Pomona-Pitzer is now 5-1-1 on the season, 2-0-1 in the conference. The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they host the Redlands Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m.

Pomona-Pitzer wasted little time finding the net against Caltech as Hannah Mandell took shot from inside the box that beat the keeper, putting the Sagehens up 1-0 just four minutes and 15 seconds after the opening whistle. Hannah Mandell put two more shots on goal less than 10 minutes after her goal, but one shot was blocked by the defender with the other one getting saved by the Caltech goalie. The Beavers responded with a run to their attacking third, putting a shot on goal but Naomi Meurice was there to make the save and keep the Sagehens up 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer was able to put three more shots up in the half with two going on frame, but Caltech was able to record two saves, sending the Sagehens into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens pressured the Beavers for the majority of the second half, taking 14 shots, putting 11 on frame but none would find the back of the net as Caltech blocked three while making eight saves.

As mentioned, the Sagehens will return to Claremont to host the Redlands Bulldogs next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
