Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team came away with their first SCIAC win of the season with a 3-1 win over Caltech on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Matthew Carlson who netted a brace with two goals in the win. Giri Mase also got on the score sheet with a goal assisted by Mattin Khoshzaban and Mikey Ross also earned an assist on the day. Will Brooks earned the win in goal for the Sagehens with one goal against and four saves.
Pomona-Pitzer outshot the Beavers 21-9 with four corner attempts in what was an active game on offense for the Sagehens. Carlson got the scoring going midway through the first half after a rebounded shot fell to the feet of Carlson, who then slotted it past the keeper to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens went into halftime with just the one goal but scored immediately out of the gate in the second half after Carlson finished off his brace after a ball flicked on by Ross gave Carlson a clear shot on goal to double the Sagehens' lead at 2-0.
Caltech made it interesting in the 57th minute after a misplayed ball in the Sagehens' defensive third led to a tap in goal for the Beavers to cut the lead down to one at 2-1. The Sagehens went on to hold off a relentless Caltech attack and were able to secure three points off of a counterattack led by Khoshzaban who played in Mase for the empty net goal to give the Sagehens the win at home.
