SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer soccer team suffered their first loss of the 2022 season after two second half goals from the Puget Sound Loggers. The Sagehens outshot the Loggers 20-13 overall but both teams registered seven shots on goal with the Loggers finding the net twice. Pomona-Pitzer is now 3-1 on the season and will begin conference play on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Occidental College at 7:00 p.m.

How It Happened 

The Sagehens fought off early pressure from the Loggers as Puget Sound recorded four shots in the first 13 minutes of the contest. Amanda Khu countered the Loggers attack with a shot on goal, but the goalkeeper was there to make the save and keep things scoreless.  

Late in the first half, the Sagehens saw a trio of shots on goal with Hannah Mandell putting two on frame with Evelyn Hasama putting one on goal as well, but all three attempts were saved, sending the game into halftime 0-0. 

The Sagehens had the first attempt of the second half with another shot on goal from Amanda Khu in the 49th minute but the Loggers made another save. Puget Sound countered the shot with a quick attack, putting a shot on goal that was saved by Taylor Kane before striking another on net, this time getting past Kane in the 51st minute to take the lead at 1-0. 

The Loggers continued to attack, taking four shots within 10 minutes of their goal but none would find the cage. Charlotte Tapp sent on a shot on frame in the 59th minute but the shot was saved to keep the Sagehens off the board. Puget Sound was able to double their lead in the 73rd minute to add some insurance against the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer was able to put five more shots up before the final whistle but ultimately fell to the Loggers 2-0.

As mentioned, the Sagehens will be back in action on Sept. 17 with their SCIAC opener at Occidental at 7:00 p.m.
