Box Score WHITTIER, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team fell to Whittier 62-52 on the road. The Sagehens were led by Emily Church who finished the game with 13 points and nine rebounds while Kaitlyn Leung (12 points) and Charlize Andaya (10 points) both recorded double-digit points as well. The Sagehens shot 29.0% from three and 28.6% from the field on the night. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Caltech at 4:00 p.m.
How It Happened
Madison Quan hit a jumper to get the Sagehens up 2-0 just 30 seconds into the game but the Poets responded with an 18-1 run to take a commanding 18-3 lead with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Maison Yee hit a three to bring the run to an end with Madison Quan and Charlize Andaya both making layups to cut the lead to 20-10 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was much more back-and-forth with Whittier earning a 19-16 scoring advantage in the period. Kaitlyn Leung hit three three-pointers in the quarter to highlight the Sagehens efforts, but the Poets entered the half with a 39-26 lead. Madison Quan hit a three-pointer to start the third quarter, but Whittier charged forward on a 17-2 run to push their lead to 53-31 with one quarter left to play.
The Sagehens turned things around in the fourth quarter as Charlize Andaya made a layup with 9:03 left to play to get Pomona-Pitzer started. Emily Church added seven points in just over three minutes while Maison Yee and Andaya added buckets as well, cutting the lead to 60-45 with 2:52 to play. Leung and Andaya both hit three-pointers with under a minute to play but the late tallies fell short as Whittier picked up the 62-52 victory despite being outscored 21-6 in the final quarter.
