Sagehens Fall In Overtime In SCIAC Tournament Championship To Whittier

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell in the SCIAC Tournament Championship to Whittier College 79-63 in overtime on Saturday night at Roberts Pavilion.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 15-10 overall and finish as the runner-up in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who led the Sagehens with 17 points and eight assists on the night.  Kaitlyn Leung added 14 points and five rebounds, Vanessa Hsia pitched in with 12 points and Amara Chidom came off the bench with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Whittier held the advantage in shooting percentage for the game as they shot 41.7% from the field while the Sagehens shot 36.5%. The Sagehens outrebounded Whittier 36-34 but Whittier held the advantage in the paint 28-16.

Whittier got out to a good lead to start the game as they began with a 9-0 run inside the first four minutes.  The Sagehens got their first basket with 5:33 left in the first and then took an 11-10 lead after a Quan layup with 1:52 left in the quarter. The Poets took the lead on a late three-pointer and took a 13-11 lead into the second.

Whittier held the lead for the majority of the second quarter and took a seven-point lead at 24-17 with 5:42 left before halftime. The Sagehens started to chip away at the lead and Charlize Andaya hit a three as time expired in the first half to give the Sagehens a 29-28 lead into halftime.

The Poets and Sagehens played a back-and-forth battle in the third as both teams held the lead throughout the quarter. The Sagehens hit a big three towards the end of the third, but Whittier responded with a three of their own to keep the lead at one point at 49-48 in favor of the Sagehens heading into the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a good start in the fourth and after a Quan three, took their largest lead of the game at 56-48 with 6:48 left to play. The Poets sparked an 11-2 run and took the lead at 59-58 with 3:38 left to play in the fourth. The Sagehens had a chance to win the game with the contest tied at 61-61 but couldn't get a good shot off at the end of regulation and the two teams went to overtime. 

Whittier took over in overtime as they got ahead early and used their defense to stop the Sagehen in the overtime period. Whittier got ahead 67-63 and after some stops on defense was able to wind out the rest of the clock to go on and win the SCIAC Tournament Championship.
