Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team earned a berth into the SCIAC Semifinals with their 53-43 win over SCIAC opponent Caltech on Tuesday night at the Linde Activities Center.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-9 overall and advance into the SCIAC Semifinals of the Postseason Tournament.
The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who led the way with 22 points and eight steals in the win. Kaitlyn Leung also reached double digits in the scoring column and recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Sagehens and Beavers both shot around 30% for the game but the Sagehens had a big edge in three-pointers as they shot 38.1% from three while Caltech only shot 30%. The rebounds were even at 39 apiece as well as points in the paint with 16 each but they had a huge advantage in the turnover battle as they forced 25 turnovers and only gave up 16.
The Sagehens wasted no time taking the lead as Quan scored the first 12 points of the game for the Sagehens via the three ball to take a 12-4 lead. Caltech came back to cut the lead down to 12-11, but Quan added a layup at the end of the first quarter as the Sagehens took a 16-11 lead into the second.
Pomona-Pitzer doubled up on the Beavers and took a 25-12 lead after a pair of made free-throws by Quan with 5:35 left before halftime. Caltech outscored Pomona-Pitzer 9-3 to end the half, but the Sagehens held a 28-21 lead at the break.
Caltech made a run midway through the third quarter and cut the deficit down to one point at 30-29, but the Sagehens answered with a big three by Leung and back-to-back buckets by Quan and Yee to take a 37-30 lead.
The Sagehens put Caltech away early in the fourth as they took a 14-point lead after a Quan threat 47-33 with 7:52 left in the fourth. After building a large lead, the Sagehens were able to ride their lead out for the remainder of the fourth quarter and held on for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament win.
