Sagehens Come Away With Late Victory At Caltech, 56-53

PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came away with a last second 56-53 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech on Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 11-9 overall and 9-5 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who posted a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds in the win. Emily Church also got into double digits in the scoring column with 10 points while Kaitlyn Leung had seven and Allison Murphy came off the bench with six. 

Pomona-Pitzer and Caltech put up very similar numbers In the close contest as the Sagehens shot 33.9% from the field to Caltech's 35.3% while the Beavers held the edge on rebounds 45-39 and the Sagehens having 12 turnovers to Caltech's 10.  The big difference in the game came at the free-throw line with the Sagehens shooting 90% (9-10) and the Beavers at just 50% (4-8).

The Sagehens got the game started with a Quan three before Caltech score six-straight to take a 6-3 lead. The Sagehens would trail the Beavers for the majority of the first quarter until Quan hit another three to tie the game at 12-12. The Sagehens ended the first on a 10-0 run to take a 19-12 lead into the second.

The Sagehens got out to a good start in the second as they extended their lead to 25-14 with just over two minutes gone in the quarter.  Caltech came back with an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to 25-22 and kept it close to trail just three points at 27-24 at halftime. 

The Beavers hung around in the third and tied the game at 33-33 with 6:21 left in the third and eventually took the lead at 39-37 with just under three minutes to play.  The Sagehens stopped he Beavers from running away with the lead in the third, but the Sagehens faced a 44-41 deficit heading into the fourth.

Caltech held the lead for the majority of the fourth until the Sagehens took the lead on four consecutive made free throws by Church to give Pomona-Pitzer a 52-49 lead with 2:40 to go. Caltech scored on back-to-back possession to take a 53-52 lead but turned the ball over with 16 seconds to give the Sagehens a chance to win the game. 

The Sagehens drew up a play for Quan who was fouled in the process and hit both of her shots from the line to give the Sagehens a 54-53 lead. Caltech has a chance to win but missed their shot as the Sagehens went on to close the game out at the line to come away with the narrow win.
