Sagehens Beat Tigers For First SCIAC Win Of The Season

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team earned its first SCIAC win of the season with a 60-49 win over Occidental on Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-6 overall and move to 1-2 to start their SCIAC season.

The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who had a game-high 18 rebounds with seven rebounds and five assists. Emily Lee also tallied double digits with 10 points while Kaitlyn Leung had nine and Emily Church put up eight points and came down with 15 rebounds.

Occidental actually had the better percentage from the floor at 31.3% to the Sagehens' 30.9%, but Pomona-Pitzer shot at 36.8% from three while the Tigers shot at just 18.2%.  Other than the percentage from three, the two teams were dead even on rebounds at 45-45 and turnovers at 15-15. 

Pomona-Pitzer started out with three three-point plays to get the offense off to a 9-1 start with an and-one layup by Quan and made threes by Lee and Katie Drias. The Sagehens extended their lead to double digits at 17-7 late in the first quarter and ended the first up 17-9.

Pomona-Pitzer started the second and took their largest lead of the half with a 21-9 advantage, but Occidental started to get its offense going after an 11-0 run put the Tigers down one point at 21-20. Despite giving up the big lead, the Sagehens never trailed in the first half and after seven points each from Quan and Lee, the Sagehens led the Tigers 27-22 heading into halftime.

The Sagehens started to build their lead again coming out of halftime after taking a 37-28 advantage after another Drias three. The Sagehens held Oxy to just 10 points in the third and went into the fourth with an 11-point advantage up 43-32.

Occidental made a quick comeback to open the fourth after climbing back into the game at 44-40 within the first three minutes of the quarter. Occidental tied the game at 47-47 just about midway through the fourth and forced the Sagehens to take a timeout with 5:23 left to play. Quan took over the game for the Sagehens in the fourth with back-to-back jumpers and an assist on a Lee three to put the Sagehens up 54-49. Occidental tried to stay with the Sagehens late but Quan went on to hit a dagger three-pointer with 39 seconds left to put Pomona-Pitzer up 59-49 and on their way to claiming their first SCIAC win of the season.
