Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to SCIAC opponent La Verne 69-60 on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens have lost their third-straight game and fall to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan and Maison Yee who each shared a team-high 12 points in the loss. Emily Church tallied nine points and 14 rebounds while Katie Drais had eight off the bench, Kellie Au with seven and Kaitlyn Leung and Emily Lee each with six.
The Sagehens and Leopards shot pretty similar numbers from the floor with the Sagehens hitting on 35% of their shots and La Verne at 37%. Pomona-Pitzer had the edge from three at 36% to La Verne's 22%, but the Leopards won the turnover battle 13-21, outrebounded the Sagehens 39-37, and tallied four more points inside the paint.
La Verne started out with a 6-1 lead to start the game that forced Pomona-Pitzer to play from behind. La Verne quickly got the lead up to 13-4 after a made three while Pomona-Pitzer fought to stay with the Leopards in the first ending the quarter down 23-14.
After a lot of offense in the first quarter, both teams slowed down a bit in the second only scoring 10 points each heading into halftime. Pomona-Pitzer got the lead down to six at 30-24, but La Verne ended the half with a pair of free throws to make it 32-24 at the break.
The Sagehen defense held La Verne to just nine points in the third quarter as they tried to chip away at the lead. La Verne extended its lead early in the third and the Sagehens tried to chip away at the lead late, but still trailed 60-47 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens spent the first half of the fourth getting back into the game after they cut the La Verne lead down to six points at 60-54 with 5:42 to play. The Sagehens made it a one-possession game for the first time since the first quarter at 60-57 but couldn't find the game-tying basket as La Verne kept the Sagehens away from the lead and closed the game out at the line.
