CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo defeated the Austin College Kangaroos 20-9 on Friday night. Matija Jancic, Nico Perna, and Sam Sasaki all ended the night with hat tricks to lead the attack while Jacob Shimon made nine saves in goal. The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 9 when they host the La Verne Leopards.
The first period was tight with both teams earning three goals, but the Sagehens outscored the Kangaroos 6-1 in the second period to take a 9-4 lead heading into halftime. Five of the six goals in the second period were on man-up opportunities with Nico Perna, Ben Sasaki, Luca Bozzo, Andrew Plaschke, and Matija Jancic all finding the back of the net to contribute to the dominant second period attack.
The Kangaroos were able to strike first in the third period,but Nico Perna, Sam Sasaki, Alexander Peterson, and Patrick Hughes scored the next four goals to extend the Sagehen lead to 13-5. Austin tallied the next two goals, but Jacob Whiting had the final say in the third period with a buzzer beater rip to the back of the cage, sending the Sagehens into the fourth period with a 14-7 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to outplay the Kangaroos as they scored less than a minute into the period with a goal from Jancic before Peterson, Kyle Green, B. Sasaki, Plaschke, and Bozzo all scored to cap off the Sagehens 20-9 victory over the Kangaroos.
