Sagehens Fall To Oxy In SCIAC Semifinal

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team fell to Occidental College 3-1 in the SCIAC Semifinals on Friday night at Jack Kemp Stadium.

Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens end their season with a 7-7-1 overall record and a third-place finish in the SCIAC regular season.

The Sagehens had one goal scorer in Graeme Logan who found the back of the net with a free kick in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer had its struggles in the first 10 minutes of the half as Occidental pressed early to try to get out to an early lead. The Tigers would eventually do so after a foul just outside the box set up a free kick in a good scoring position for Occidental.  The Tigers were able to covert the freekick after the ball went through the wall and into the back of the net to give Occidental a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the match.

The Sagehens went into halftime trailing 1-0 and their comeback got much harder just two minutes into the second half after Nicholas Mikhail was shown his second yellow of the game as the Sagehens were forced to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game.

Despite being down a man for the entire second half, the Sagehens set up a free kick just outside the box for their lefty specialist. Logan was able to lift the ball over the wall and past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute.

Occidental looked for a game-winner late in regulation, but the Sagehen defense held its own as they were able to force the game into overtime.

Pomona-Pitzer tried to find a go-ahead goal in overtime off of the counter while they were still down to ten men, but just seconds before the end of the first overtime period, Occidental set up a free kick opportunity that was headed in to put the Tigers up 2-1 with the final 10 minutes overtime period remaining.

Occidental sealed the win in the 105th minute after a cross played into the box was struck first time into the goal as the Tigers went up two goals late in the game and would go on to hold off the shorthanded Sagehens
