Pomona-Pitzer Falls To Augsburg To End David Wells Classic

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team ended the 2022 David Wells Classic with a 66-53 loss against non-conference opponent Augsburg on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium. 

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-4 overall.  

The Sagehens were led by Kaitlyn Leung who notched a double-double with 16 points at 10 rebounds. Madison Quan totaled 11 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds while Kellie Au and Emily Church each chipped in with 9 points in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer struggled from the floor hitting on just 28.8% of its shots from the field while they hit a higher percentage from three at 30.8%. the Sagehens outrebounded Augsburg 43-39 but committed 18 turnovers in the game that the Auggies turned into 10 points. Augsburg also dominated in the paint as they scored 30 points down low while the Sagehens totaled just 12. 

Augsburg made its first two shots of the game to take a 4-2 lead, but the Sagehens started out on fire from three to start the game and after four straight made threes, led 14-4 midway through the first half. The Auggies started to chip away at the lead late in the first quarter to cut it down to 19-15 at the end of one quarter of play.

After the Sagehens started out hot from three to start the first, it was Augsburg who came back to tie the game at 22-22 after some good shooting to open the second. Despite giving up their lead, the Sagehens never trailed in the second quarter after they cooled off from three hitting on just 3-9 shots from three and just 3-11 from the field.  The Auggies went on to hit another three at the buzzer as they outscored the Sagehens 15-11 in the second quarter and went into halftime tied 30-30.

Church and Leung got the Sagehens out to a quick start in the third to take a 36-31 lead hitting on their first three attempts from the floor, but Augsburg sparked an 11-0 run to give them control of the game at 42-36. The Sagehens broke the run with a Leung three, but the Auggies held the Sagehens to just nine points in the third to lead 46-39 heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens continued to struggle from the floor early in the fourth quarter as Augsburg was able to extend its lead to 48-39 with 8:33 left in the fourth. Leung and Church had back-to-back makes to get the Sagehens within six points at 55-49 with 2:48 left to play, but the Auggies held on late and closed the game out at the free-throw line to hand Pomona-Pitzer a loss to end the 2022 David Wells Classic.
