Sagehens Top Cavaliers on Friday Evening to Start 2022 David Wells Tournament

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team started off the 2022 David Wells Classic with a 67-57 victory over the Cabrini Cavaliers. Madison Quan led the Sagehens with 23 points, nine steals, and seven rebounds while Emily Church had 16 points with seven boards as well. Overall, Pomona-Pitzer shot 38.8% from the field and 32.0% from downtown. The Sagehens did well taking care of the ball compared to the Cavaliers as Pomona-Pitzer recorded 18 turnovers to Cabrini's 27. With the win, the Sagehens are now 2-3 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow evening when they host Augsburg.

The Cavaliers held the early edge in the game as they jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead just over a minute into the contest before extending their lead to 10-4 with 5:40 remaining in the first. Maison Yee, Katie Drais, and Emily Lee all recorded buckets to bring the game to a 10-10 tie with 4:04 remaining in the first quarter but the Cavaliers went on a 6-3 run to end the quarter, putting the Sagehens behind 16-13 heading into the second quarter. 

Emily Church made the first basket of the second quarter, but Cabrini responded with a shot from beyond the three-point arc to push their lead to 19-15. The Sagehens quickly responded as Kaitlyn Leung and Emily Church both made layups to tie the game at 19-19. Cabrini regained the lead with a three-pointer but a Church jumper and Maison Yee three put the Sagehens up 24-22 with 4:37 left in the half. The Cavaliers were able to tie things at 24-24 but the Sagehens closed out the half on a 5-2 run to take a 29-26 lead heading into the halftime break. 

The Sagehens got off to a quick start in the third as Kaitlyn Leung hit a three 21 seconds into the quarter which was followed by an Emily Church layup and Madison Quan three, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 39-28 lead with 7:35 remaining in the third. The Sagehens continued to extend their lead as Quan, Emily Lee, and Charlize Andaya all recorded baskets to give Pomona-Pitzer a 48-37 lead. Cabrini earned the last three points of the quarter with a jumper and a free throw and carried the momentum into the fourth as they closed the Sagehen lead to just one point at 48-47 with 7:31 remaining in regulation. Pomona-Pitzer quickly regrouped as Masion Yee made a layup before Madison Quan hit another three, pushing the Sagehens lead to 53-47. Quan made another three-point play with 3:17 left in the game after getting fouled on a three-point attempt, making all three free throws to set the lead at 56-49. Kellie Au pushed the Sagehen advantage to double-digits at 61-51 with a three-pointer with 1:11 on the clock. Kaitlyn Leung, Madison Quan, and Emily Lee all recorded two more points down the stretch to put the finishing touches on the Sagehens 67-57 win over the Cavaliers.
