Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team advanced to the SCIAC Tournament Championship after their 3-2 win over Redlands in the SCIAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens advanced to the SCIAC Tournament Championship for the fifth-straight season and improved to 12-2-3 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer had three separate goal scorers as Isla Burch, Amanda Khu, and Kelsey Shintaku all found the back of the net while Spencer Deutz added an assist in the win.
The Sagehens asserted their dominance early on in the game as the regular season champs struck first in the 11th minute of the game. After the ball was played into the box by Hannah Mandell and Charlotte Tapp, Khu found herself in a prime goal-scoring opportunity as the ball fell to her on the spot and slotted away for the first goal of the game.
Pomona-Pitzer went into halftime with a 1-0 lead but doubled their advantage in the 57th minute of the match after Burch put away a corner off the foot of Deutz to put the Sagehens up 2-0.
The Sagehens got the lead up to as much as 3-0 after Ella Endo weaved her way through the Redlands' defense and after a shot on goal, Shintaku was there for the follow-up to give Pomona-Pitzer a three-goal lead with 13 minutes to go.
The Bulldogs made it interesting late after they pushed their attack all the way up the field and started taking long shots against the Sagehen defense. Redlands got their first goal in the 83rd minute of the match from a shot outside the box and then another long shot found the back of the net just two minutes later and cut the lead down to 3-2 with five minutes remaining.
Despite giving up two goals in as many minutes, the Sagehens were able to regroup and ride their big lead to a win in the semifinals and will now host the winner of CMS and Cal Lutheran on Saturday, November 5th at 12:00 p.m.
