Quan And Leung Lead Sagehens Past Bruins, 56-51

Box Score

NEWBERG, OR. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team earned their first win of the season with a 56-51 win over George Fox on Sunday afternoon at Miller Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 1-1 overall on their road trip to start the season.

The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who scored a game-high 18 points and had five steals in the win. Kaitlyn Leung added a double-double with 17 points and led the team with 12 rebounds while Sharon Nejad added seven points to the win.

The Sagehens shot just below George Fox from the field with 32.8% to the Bruins' 36.5% but made up for it on the three-point side with 27.3% and holding George Fox to just 7.7% from beyond the arc. George Fox held the rebound advantage 47-34 but the Sagehen defense forced the Bruins to turn the ball over 22 and converted 20 points off of turnovers.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to an early lead with a 9-4 advantage in the first four minutes of play. George Fox got the offense going late in the first quarter, but the Sagehens were able to hang on to the lead at 11-10 heading into the second.

Much like the first quarter, the Sagehens controlled the game in the early stages of the second quarter and extended their lead to 22-17 after a made three by Emily Lee with 5:11 left to play until halftime. George Fox then responded with a small run to cut the lead back down to one point at 24-23 with the Sagehens hanging on to that one-point lead into halftime at 26-25.

The Sagehens took over the game in the third quarter after they outscored George Fox 21-15 with their best offensive quarter of the game. Nejad and Quan took over the offense in the first four minutes and got the lead up to 40-27. The Bruins spent the remainder of the quarter doing damage control and got the deficit to 47-40 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer heading into the fourth.

George Fox quickly erased the Sagehens' cushion after they brought the lead back down to one point again at 47-46 with 6:38 to play. Despite getting within striking distance multiple times throughout the game, the Bruins never took the lead away from the Sagehens as Pomona-Pitzer held on for their first road win of the season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next stay on the road and head to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, November 19th at 1:00 p.m.
