Pomona-Pitzer's Season Comes to a Close After PK Shootout with Trinity

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Tx. – In a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Second Round game between the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens and Trinity Tigers, the Sagehens suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in penalty kicks after fighting through a high-action 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of play. The Sagehens scored first with Evelyn Hasama's first career goal coming in in the 47th minute but the Tigers countered with a goal of their own 34 seconds later to tie things at 1-1. The Sagehens certainly put the pressure on the Tigers as Pomona-Pitzer outshot Trinity 21-10 on the game. The Tigers also played aggressive for much of the match as they recorded 14 fouls and a yellow card while the Sagehens recorded just three fouls.

The Tigers attacked early in the contest with a corner and shot just a minute after the opening whistle. The Tigers took three more shots before the Sagehens were able to get their offense going with a shot from Hannah Hong and one from Charlotte Tapp in the 20th minute. From there, the Sagehens began to find their groove with Taylor Venenciano leading the Sagehens defense through the midfield, allowing just one Trinity shot for the rest of the half while recording one of her own.

The Sagehens came out of the halftime break ready to go as Naomi Meurice made a save just 1:16 into the second half. Pomona-Pitzer quickly countered after the early shot from the Tigers as Isla Burch drove the ball to the edge of the box before sending it up to Evelyn Hasama. Hasama took a rip from nearly 25 yards out and snuck it right under the crossbar for her first career goal and the 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. Unfortunately, the Tigers were ready with a response as they scored 34 seconds later to lock things at 1-1. The Sagehens quickly regained momentum and applied pressure with four shots and a corner kick before Trinity recorded a shot of their own in the 57th minute.

Pomona-Pitzer was able to record seven more shots in the half with their most dangerous opportunity coming in the 90th minute. Eliana Prosnitz sent two shots in in the 87th and 88th minute with the second one resulting in a corner kick. Off the corner, the Sagehens had a flurry of shots get knocked around with one eventually finding the back of the net, but the side referee's flag went up as the Sagehens were caught offsides, sending the game into overtime tied 1-1.

The Sagehens commanded the first overtime period as they recorded four shots and one corner but only one was on frame and the Trinity keeper was there to make the save. The Sagehens continued to play well in overtime as the defense didn't allow a single shot in overtime while the Sagehens took just one shot in the second overtime period. With neither team finding the game-winning goal, the match went to penalty kicks for the second-straight season on Paul McGinley Field.

Trinity started the shootout with a shot well over the crossbar, but the Tigers saved Venenciano's shot to keep it 0-0 after the first round. Both teams made their shots in the second round with Genevieve Gray connecting for the Sagehens. The Sagehens ran into trouble in the third round as Trinity connected before Hannah Mandell's shot was saved. In the fourth round, both teams made their shot with Ella Endo connecting for Pomona-Pitzer but in the fifth round Naomi Meurice made the save to keep Pomona-Pitzer in the shootout. The Trinity goalkeeper was able to save the PK from Eliana Prosnitz, ending the Sagehens' season in penalty kicks for the second year in a row despite the Sagehens displaying top-tier offense and defense for the entirety of the match.
