Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team advanced to the SCIAC semifinals after their 1-1 (5-4) penalty shootout win over La Verne on Tuesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Update: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-6-1 overall and move on to the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals.
Matthew Carlson netted the only goal of the night for the Sagehens in regulation with an assist from Alex Bonville while Gabriel Stevens earned the win in goal with three saves and a crucial save in PK's.
La Verne came out in the first half and jumped ahead early as the Pomona-Pitzer defense let a defender get in behind and the Leopards converted a one-on-one from a tight angle to take the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of the match.
Pomona-Pitzer came right back seven minutes later for an equalizer after Bonville slipped in a ball to Carlson and slotted underneath the keeper to tie the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute.
Both teams had big scoring opportunities throughout the rest of regulation but terrific play by both goalkeepers kept the game tied at 1-1 and forced a penalty shootout to decide who moved on to the SCIAC Semifinals.
Stevens came up huge in the first penalty shootout of his collegiate career after a big save in the second round to give the Sagehens a one-kick advantage. The Sagehens went through all five penalty kicks flawlessly after Niclas Ulrich, Jorge Guillen-Lopez, Kyle Lau, Carlson and capped off by Graeme Logan who netted the game-winner to send the Sagehens through to the Semifinals.
