CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-20) loss to Cal Lutheran on Friday evening at home, ending a five-game win streak for the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow evening when they take the court against Sixth Street Rival CMS at 4:00 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion. Paige Mountanos led the team in kills with eight on the night while Lauren Asato recorded 11 digs. Kylie Mies dished out nine assists and recorded 10 digs. Chloe Gill ended the night with six kills and two service aces while Kellan Hayes had two solo blocks and one assist.

The Sagehens had the advantage in the opening portion of set one, taking a quick 2-0 lead with a Chloe Gill kill and Kellan Hayes block. The Regals responded with a 3-0 run, but the Sagehens had an answer of their own, going on an 11-5 run to take the lead at 13-8 and force a Regals timeout. The run saw two service aces from Gill along with kills from Grace Fan, Paige Mountanos, Kellan Hayes, and Chloe Gill. The Sagehens took the first point out of the break but a 9-2 run from Cal Lutheran put the Regals ahead 17-16. Pomona-Pitzer quickly countered with four unanswered points coming from Fan, Laurel Park, and Paige Wilson, regaining the lead at 20-17 and forcing a Cal Lutheran timeout. Paige Wilson increased the lead to 21-17 with a kill out of the break but the Regals made a late surge to the finish, taking nine of the next 12 points to take a hard fought 26-24 set one victory.

Set two saw the two teams go back and forth in the early going with the Sagehens working to a slight 7-4 advantage before the Regals rallied back with a 4-1 run to tie things at 8-8. Kellan Hayes recorded a kill which was followed by a Hanna Chen service ace to make it 10-8 but the Regals used an 11-2 run to take a commanding 19-12 lead, forcing the Sagehens to call a timeout. Paige Wilson and Grace Fan both recorded kills out of the break to attempt to spark a comeback trailing 20-14 but the Regals ended set two on a 5-2 run taking the set 25-16.

Cal Lutheran found the early momentum in set three as they found themselves up 7-4 in the set like the Sagehens did in set two. Laurel Park and Paige Wilson both recorded kills to pull the team within one at 7-6 before a 5-3 run had Pomona-Pitzer leading 11-10. Cal Lutheran was able to fire back with a 7-3 run to force a Pomona-Pitzer timeout trailing 17-14. Out of the break, the Sagehens rallied back, pulling within two at 20-18 with blocks from Fan, Hayes, and Park to force a Regals timeout. The Regals took the next two points out of the break forcing a quick Sagehen timeout to try to stop the momentum, but Cal Lutheran held a 3-2 edge out of the break to take set three 25-20.
