Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team fell to SCIAC opponent Chapman 4-3 on Wednesday night at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Alex Bonville who had a goal and an assist in the loss. Jeffrey Tiglon and Giri Mase also netted goals while Graeme Logan and Mikey Ross added assists as well.
Coming off of two huge road wins for the Sagehens at Redlands and Cal Lutheran, the Sagehens returned home to face SCIAC foe Chapman seeking their fourth-straight SCIAC win of the season.
The Sagehens got off to a great start after they dominated possession in the first half and struck first in the 24th minute after Ross found Mase to put the Sagehens up 1-0. However, the lead was short-lived as the Panthers went down the pitch and earned a penalty just 30 seconds later to even the score at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer added two more goals just before halftime as Logan played in Bonville in the 35th minute and played a curling ball into the side netting to put the Sagehens up 2-1. Tiglon made it 3-1 Sagehens heading into halftime after a foul gave Pomona-Pitzer the ball in a great set-piece opportunity. Bonville played in the free kick into the box and a glancing header by Tiglon put the Sagehens up two heading into the break.
It was a tale of two halves on offense as the Panthers started to get rolling in the second 45 minutes. Chapman started their comeback early with a goal just over a minute into the second half to cut the lead down to one goal at 3-2.
The Panthers scored a late equalizer in the 79th minute of the match off of a counterattack to tie the game at 3-3 with 11 minutes to play. The Sagehens surrendered a late throw-in opportunity for the Panthers with time counting down on the clock. Chapman took a long throw and a desperation chance inside the box earned the game-winning goal as the ball snuck in past the Sagehen keeper to hand the Sagehens a heartbreaking loss in their return home.
