Sagehens Complete Sweep Over Bulldogs

REDLANDS, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team swept the University of Redlands Bulldogs 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) on Tuesday night. The Sagehens attack was led by Chloe Gill who ended the night with 12 kills and a .308 clip. Lauren Asato anchored the team defense with 16 digs while Kylie Mies dished out 15 assists. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 7 when they host Cal Lutheran in Roberts Pavilion at CMS.  

Set one started with a service error from the Bulldogs that kickstarted a 4-2 run for the Sagehens to give the team an early 5-2 lead. Although the Bulldogs were able to close the lead to 8-6 over the next few rallies, the Sagehens continued to dominate, extending their lead to 14-8 with kills from Chloe Gill, Paige Mountanos, and Paige Wilson, forcing the Bulldogs to take a timeout. Redlands was able to go on a 7-4 run out of the break, pulling within three at 18-15 to force a Sagehen timeout. Out of the break, the Sagehens flew straight to the end of the set with seven unanswered points with kills from Grace Fan and Chloe Gill along with blocks from Laurel Park and Kellan Hayes to take set one 25-15.

The Sagehens carried their momentum into the second set, shooting out to a 10-3 lead to put Redlands in an early hole. The Bulldogs managed to regroup, going on a 7-2 run to force a Sagehen timeout at 12-10. Out of the break, the Bulldogs continued to pressure the Sagehens, taking a slight 7-5 edge to bring the game to a tie at 17-17. From there, the Sagehens got right back to work, outscoring the Bulldogs 8-4 down the stretch as Cameron Hodges and Chloe Gill both recorded kills to in the run to take set two 25-21. 

Set three featured a much closer start as Redlands took a 4-3 lead early on before the Sagehens answered with a 6-2 run to take the lead at 9-6. The run featured back-to-back service aces from Kellan Hayes along with an ace from Paige Wilson and kills from Hayes and Gill. The Sagehens extended their lead to 14-8 to force a Redlands timeout with kills from Tene Ariyo and Natalie Potter. Out of the break, the Bulldogs cut the lead to three points at 17-14 with a 6-3 run. Pomona-Pitzer rallied right back with a 6-2 run as Cameron Hodges, Kellan Hayes, and Tene Ariyo all recorded kills to give the Sagehens a 23-16 lead. Despite being two points away from the sweep, the Sagehens had their work cut out for them as the Bulldogs made a last stretch effort with a 5-1 run, forcing a Sagehens timeout leading 24-21. Out of the break, the Bulldogs were able to record one more point but a Chloe Gill kill completed the sweep as the Sagehens took set three 25-22.
