Sagehens Claim Fourth-Straight SCIAC Regular Season Title with Win over Bulldogs

Box Score

REDLANDS, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's soccer team ended the regular season with a 3-1 victory over the Redlands Bulldogs on the road. With the victory, the Sagehens end the regular season 11-2-3 with a conference record of 8-1-3 overall, claiming their fourth-straight SCIAC Regular Season Championship. In addition to the Sagehens victory, the California Lutheran Regals fought through a 0-0 tie on the road with the La Verne Leopards, ending any chance of a SCIAC Co-Champions finish to the 2022 season.

The battle between the Sagehens and Bulldogs featured a nearly even attack with Pomona-Pitzer holding a slight 22-21 edge in shots with the Bulldogs recording nine on goal to the Sagehens eight. Naomi Meurice made eight saves on the night while Isla Burch, Amanda Khu, and Charlotte Tapp each tallied on goal in the regular season finale.

The Sagehens got off to a quick start as Charlotte Tapp and Amanda Khu both took shots just off frame in the opening 15 minutes. The Bulldogs were able to respond with two shots of their own with a header shot going wide with the other on frame, but Naomi Meurce was in between the pipes to make the save. The two teams took a combined three more shots with the Sagehens holding the 2-1 edge before settling into a possession battle through the midfield. Pomona-Pitzer began to pressure as Ella Enda took a shot inside the box that was saved but the rebound was immediately sent into the back of the net as Isla Burch put Pomona-Pitzer up 1-0 in the 32nd minute. Redlands countered just a minute later with two shots and a corner but both attempts were blocked away to preserve the Sagehens 1-0 lead. Down the stretch, both teams took two more shots before halftime, but none found the net as the Sagehens went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Out of the break, the Sagehens were on the attack right after the whistle. Amanda Khu stormed down the field and shot one past the keeper to double the Sagehens lead to 2-0 just 41 seconds in the half. The goal was followed by a flurry of shots from the Sagehens with Tapp, Endo, Eveleyn Hasama, and Shay Reifert all pressuring the Redlands goalkeeper for nearly a full 10 minutes. In the 55th minute, Reifert's attempt was saved, causing a scramble inside the box and Charlotte Tapp was there to strike it into the back of the cage, giving Pomona-Pitzer a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs were able to hold a slight 6-5 advantage in shots following the Tapp goal over the next 23-minute period before connecting on a rebounded ball in the 78th minute, cutting the Sagehens lead to 3-1. Redlands continued to knock on the door following their goal, taking seven more shots in the last 12 minutes of play with three on goal but Naomi Meurice played well under pressure, making each save for the three shots on goal from the Bulldogs.

As mentioned, with the win, the Sagehens have clinched the No. 1 seed overall, earning their fourth-straight SCIAC Regular Season Championship Title.
