Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team came away with a big 3-2 win over Cal Lutheran on Senior Day on Wednesday night at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-6 overall and 5-4 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had three separate goal scorers with Giri Mase, Alex Greenstein, and Alex Bonville while Niclas Ulrich came away with an assist in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time getting an early lead after they struck in the 5th minute of the match. Ulrich played a beautiful long ball in from the Sagehen backline that sprung free Mase. Mase capitalized on his one-on-one with the keeper and gave the Sagehens the 1-0 lead.
Although the Sagehens took an early lead, it was short-lived as the Kingsmen came back not even a minute later with an equalizer to square the game at 1-1.
After the slow starts on defense by both teams, the Sagehens and Kingsmen stayed scoreless for the remainder of the half to head into halftime tied at 1-1.
Coming out of halftime, it was the Kingsmen with the quick strike as they netted a go-ahead goal just over two minutes into the second half from a headed cross to go up 2-1. Cal Lutheran enjoyed its lead for about 10 minutes before Greenstein got the ball in the box and put on some moves for a spectacular solo finish to put the Sagehens even at 2-2 in the 58th minute.
With the Sagehens needing an equalizer, the offense dominated possession with chance after chance against the Cal Lutheran defense. The Sagehens finally broke through after a ball crossed into the box found the feet of Bonville who slotted it past the keeper for the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
Cal Lutheran tried to find a goal to salvage a draw late in the game, but the Sagehen defense stayed solid late without even an attempt on goal in the final 15 minutes to hang on for the win on the final regular season game at home.
