Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team defeated the Chapman Panthers with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) sweep on Tuesday night. Paige Wilson and Chloe Gill both recorded 10 kills while Paige Mountanos and Grace Fan both ended the night with eight. Kylie Mies dished out 24 assists with eight digs while Lauren Asato recorded 22 digs. Paige Wilson also contributed heavily to the defense with 17 digs. The Sagehens are now 15-8 overall and 10-5 in conference and will host Caltech on Friday at 7:00 p.m. for their last regular season game as they celebrate senior day.
The Sagehens wasted no time in set one as they jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before laying it on, extending their lead to 8-3 and 15-5 with a 10-4 run, forcing the Panthers to use both of their timeouts in the early going. Pomona-Pitzer saw kills from Chloe Gill, Kellan Hayes, Paige Mountanos, Kylie Mies, and Grace Fan. The Sagehens continued to charge forward as they used a 6-3 run to take a commanding 21-8 lead before taking the set 25-15 with a kill from Grace Fan.
Set two featured a much closer start with the game coming to a tie eight separate times until the Sagehens went on a 4-0 run to take the first real lead of the set at 13-9 and force a Chapman timeout. The Sagehens continued to edge the Panthers as they held a 6-4 advantage to take the lead at 19-13 and force another Chapman timeout. Out of the break, the Panthers were able to record two-straight points but kills from Chloe Gill, Tene Ariyo, Kellan Hayes, Paige Mountanos, and Paige Wilson were too much to handle as Pomona-Pitzer took set two 25-20.
The third set was arguably the most competitive of the night as the Panthers got out to an early 4-2 lead before the Sagehens battled back to tie things at 5-5 with a kill from Tene Ariyo. The two teams continued to go back and forth, working all the way to a 12-12 tie before the Sagehens recorded three-straight, including a Wilson ace, to force the Panthers to call a timeout trailing 15-12. Out of the break, the Sagehens went on a 4-2 run with another Wilson ace followed by kills from Chloe Gill and Tene Ariyo as well as a Lauren Asato ace. The 4-2 run put the Sagehens up 19-14, forcing another Chapman timeout. Down the stretch, the Sagehens and Panthers went an even 6-6 but Chloe Gill delivered the final point with her 10th kill of the night.
