CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team earned their third-straight sweep with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-20, 25-17) victory over the La Verne Leopards. Chloe Gill was the standout performer of the match, ending the night with 18 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, recording only two errors. Lauren Asato also had a stellar night in Voelkel, recording 21 digs and seven assists while Eleanor Nicholson dished out 18 assists. Kellan Hayes and Hanna Chen both recorded four service aces while Hayes led the team with three block assists and one solo block. The Sagehens are now 13-6 overall and 8-3 in the conference. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Oct. 18 when they host Redlands at 7:00 p.m. 

Chloe Gill got the Sagehens started with the first kill of the match. Paige Mountanos and Kellan Hayes recorded a block on the next play to make it 2-0. The Leopards got their attack going, countering with a 6-2 run to take a 6-4 lead over the Sagehens. As a sight for what was to come in set one, the Sagehens answered right back and tied things at 6-6 before La Verne pushed their lead out to 11-8 with a 5-2 run. The Sagehens were able to rally right back with a 6-1 run, forcing a Leopards timeout with kills from Paige Mountanos and service aces from Hanna Chen and Kellan Hayes. Out of the break, the Leopards regained the lead with an 8-3, forcing a Sagehen timeout trailing 20-17. The Sagehens quickly responded out of the break as Gill, Hayes, and Mountanos all assisted on blocks along with a Paige Wilson kill, cutting the lead to 22-21. The Leopards earned a block of their own to make it 23-21 resulting in another Sagehen timeout. Pomona-Pitzer took the next three points out of the break with two Kellan Hayes service aces and a Paige Mountanos kill, taking the lead at 24-23. The Leopards countered with two points of their own to take the lead at 25-24 but the Sagehens went on a 3-1 run take regain the lead at 27-26. La Verne was able to record a kill and lock things at 27-27 but a La Verne error followed by a Lauren Asato service ace gave the Sagehens a wild 29-27 set one victory.  

La Verne started set two on a 7-3 run in set two, but the Sagehens responded with a 7-2 run with kills from Paige Wilson and Chloe Gill to take a slight 10-9 lead. The set featured a tight back and forth battle from there with La Verne working to a 14-12 lead before the Sagehens went on a 7-3 run to take the lead at 19-17, forcing a La Verne timeout. The Sagehens remaining in control of the set from there, ending the set with a 6-3 edge in points down the stretch. The swing featured kills from Gill, Fan, Mountanos, and ended with a Hanna Chen service ace, taking the set 25-20. 

In set three, the Leopards took the first two points but two La Verne errors followed by two Chen service aces put the Sagehens up 4-2. The two teams played even with the Sagehens holding a slight edge at 11-8 before the Leopards tied the game at 11-11. Chloe Gill and Paige Mountanos both recorded kills to regain the lead at 13-11 but La Verne answered with a 4-1 run to take the lead at 15-14. The Sagehens went on a scorching run from there, ending the third set 25-17 after recording 11 of the last 13 points scored in the match. The run saw kills from Paige Wilson, Laurel Park, and Chloe Gill as well as blocks from Grace Fan and Kellan Hayes. The last point of the match was arguably the best one as Chloe Gill rifled the final kill of the night for the game point.
