Sagehens Split In Day One Of Harvard Tournament

PROVIDENCE, RI. – The Pomona-Pitzer Water Polo team split day one of the Harvard Tournament with a 12-11 loss to Brown and an 11-10 win over MIT on Saturday afternoon at Brown.

Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 11-12 overall.

Pomona-Pitzer 11, Brown 12 

The Sagehens were led by Sam Sasaki who had four goals in the loss. Benjamin Sasaki also netted a hat-trick with three goals, Matija Jancic had two and Kyle Green and Jack Ryan chipped in with one. 

The Sagehens started out with a goal from Ben Sasaki before Brown got two straight to take a 2-1 lead. Brown extended its lead to 3-1 but the Sagehens ended the first with a goal from Jancic to make it 3-2 heading into the second.

Brown and Pomona-Pitzer alternated goals to start the second and Brown converted two penalties in the second quarter and four total while goals from Ben Sasaki made it 7-4 Brown heading into halftime.

The Sagehens had a big third quarter to get back into the game after they outscored Brown 4-2. Sasaki and Ryan started out the scoring for the Sagehens with both goals answered by the Bears, but Green and Sam Sasaki ended the third with back-to-back goals to cut the lead down to 9-8.

Brown won the sprint and scored the first two goals of the fourth, but back-to-back goals from Sam Sasaki and Jancic got the deficit back down to one goal at 11-10. After a Bear's goal, Sam Sasaki got the lead back down to one with 2:24 left to play, but the Sagehens couldn't find an equalizer in the final two minutes of the game as they fell to Brown in game one.

Pomona-Pitzer 11, MIT 10

The Sagehens were led by Jancic who netted four goals in the win. Green, Koretsky, and Sam Sasaki all scored two goals while Ryan also scored one.

Pomona-Pitzer bounced back in game two of the Harvard Tournament with a win over MIT. The Sagehens scored four goals in the first quarter after Sam Sasaki, Koretsky, and Ryan got the Sagehens out to a 4-3 lead.

The Sagehens got one goal in the second from Sam Sasaki, but the Beavers outscored the Sagehens 2-1 in the second to even the game at 5-5 heading into halftime.

 Each team came out of halftime and scored three goals as Green scored his second and Jancic added two more to his total to end the third quarter tied at 8-8.

Pomona-Pitzer built a strong lead to open the fourth with back-to-back goals from Green and Jancic, but the Beavers responded with two-straight goals to tie the game but up at 10-10 with three minutes remaining. After a few defensive stops, the Sagehens got their game-winner off the hand of Jancic with 21 seconds remaining to take an 11-10 win over MIT.
