Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team hosted the Whittier Poets in the inaugural game at Voelkel Gymnasium at the new Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness, earning a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-20) victory. The Sagehens attack was led by Paige Wilson who ended the night with nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage while also recording 14 digs. Kylie Mies and Eleanor Nicholson both dished out double-digit assists at 18 and 17, respectively while Lauren Asato recorded 17 digs. With the sweep, the Sagehens are now 11-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Sagehens will be back in action on Oct. 14 when they host the Occidental Tigers.
Kellan Hayes earned the first kill of the match, but Whittier responded with a 5-2 run to take the lead at 5-3. The Sagehens promptly responded with an 8-2 run to take the lead at 11-7 and force a Whittier timeout. The run featured kills from Paige Wilson, Laurel Park, and Grace Fan. Out of the break, the Poets went on a 4-1 run to pull within one at 12-11 but the Sagehens stormed down the homestretch from there, taking the set 25-14 with a 13-3 run. The run saw kills from Chloe Gill, Kellan Hayes, Paige Mountanos, and Paige Wilson.
In the second set, the Sagehens continued to attack as they navigated to a 7-4 lead before putting the pressure on with a 9-3 run to take a 16-7 lead, utilizing kills from Hayes, Gill, Wilson, and Kylie Mies. From there, the two teams traded points down the stretch, but the Sagehens earned a slight 9-8 edge in points to take the set 25-15.
The Poets started set three on a 5-3 run, but the Sagehens regained the lead with five unanswered points as Laurel Park recorded a kill and Paige Wilson recorded an ace. Pomona-Pitzer continued to increase their lead as Tene Ariyo and Paige Wilson both recorded kills to help the Sagehens take a 15-9 advantage. Pomona-Pitzer continued to attack with a 5-3 run to take a 20-12 lead and force a Whittier timeout. Out of the break, the Poets surged back into the set with a 4-0 run to force a Sagehen timeout. After the timeout, Grace Fan recorded a kill and service ace while Laurel Park recorded a kill to take a 23-16 lead. Whittier made another 4-0 run but a Laurel Park kill and Tene Ariyo block ended the set 25-20, giving the Sagehens the 3-0 sweep.
