Box Score

ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team opened up SCIAC play with a 31-17 win at Chapman on Saturday night at Ernie Chapman Stadium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.

Quinten Wimmer led the recivers with 69 yards and two touchdowns with Will Radice catching eight balls for 58 yards. The defense had a big game on the road as Thomas McConnell led the way with 14 total tackles, Nate Barewin with eight and Briggs Garrison with seven.

The Sagehens jumped ahead early in the first quarter after the first Chapman drive ended with a botched snap on their punt attempt to give the Sagehens the ball deep in Chapman territory.  The Sagehens wasted no time as it only took two plays to get the first score of the game as Noble found Quinten Wimmer for 16 yards and the score to put the Sagehens up 7-0.

Chapman responded with three points on their next drive, but it took them 17 plays to do so to cut the Sagehen lead down to 7-3. The Sagehens struck again early in the second as Noble found Wimmer again with a 15-yard strike to make it 14-3.  Pomona-Pitzer started to break the game open in the second quarter after a punt was blocked by the Sagehen special teams unit to give the offense another great field position to start in Chapman territory.  Noble and the Sagehens wasted no time adding another touchdown to their total off of a QB draw from seven yards out to extend the lead to 21-3. Chapman went on to get their first touchdown of the game late in the first half, but the Sagehens held a 21-10 lead at halftime.

Another turnover forced by the Sagehens in the third after a forced fumble by the defense was recovered by William Welch and the Sagehens followed up with a 30-yard run by Noble for the score to push the lead to 28-10 over the Panthers.

Chapman tried to make a comeback in the second half after a nine play, 70-yard drive to cut the lead down to 28-17, but the Sagehens were able to push the lead back up to two touchdowns after Cameron Shirangi nailed a 31-yard field goal to make it 31-17 with just over 14 minutes left in the fourth.

Chapman had a chance to cut it down to a one-score game after a big punt return by the Panthers gave Chapman the ball deep in Sagehen territory.  The Sagehen defense came up huge with a 4th and 1 stop to prevent Chapman from getting within a score to keep the lead at 14 points with 8:30 left to play.

Noble and the offense got the ball back and started to drain the clock with a flurry of first downs to hold on to the lead and give the Sagehens a win on the road in their SCIAC opener.

Up Next: The Sagehens return home to host La Verne on Saturday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m.
