Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team fell to the Redlands Bulldogs 80-72 on Monday night. Madison Quan recorded a team-high 27 points and four steals while Kaitlyn Leung chimed in for 12 points. The Sagehens shot 43.4% from the field, making 29 of 67 attempts while shooting 6 of 11 from downtown. The Sagehens will be back in action on Wed. Jan. 19 when they host Whittier at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens started the game on a 6-2 run with Kaitlyn Leung hitting a three to open the game. The Bulldogs quickly battled back to tie the game at 8-8 with 5:55 left in the first quarter. Pomona-Pitzer went on a 10-3 run to close out the quarter with Quan and Leung both hitting shots from beyond the arc to give the Sagehens an 18-11 lead going into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs went on a 15-4 run that lasted nearly five minutes, forcing the Sagehens to call a timeout trailing 26-22. Out of the break, Madison Quan hit a jump shot to pull the team within two. Pomona-Pitzer continued to battle down the stretch as Kaitlyn Leung, Vanessa Hsia, and Madison Quan all hit shots to give the Sagehens a 34-32 lead heading into the halftime break.
Charlize Andaya made the first bucket of the third quarter just nine seconds in, but the Bulldogs quickly responded to tie the game at 38-38 with 8:28 to play in the quarter. The two teams traded points to get to a 40-40 tie before Madison Quan hit a three sparking a quick 6-0 run to take a 46-40 lead with 4:03 remaining in the quarter. Redlands began to pick up steam with 3:56 on the clock in the third, cutting the Sagehens lead to 50-48 after an 8-4 run. Amara Chidom pushed the lead to 52-48 with a layup but Redlands recorded the next four points at the free throw line to bring the game to a tie at 52-52 heading into the fourth quarter.
Redlands started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 58-54 lead and force a Pomona-Pitzer timeout. The Bulldogs continued to attack, going on a 12-3 run to take a 70-57 lead while bringing the clock down to 2:58. Vanessa Hsia brought the run to an end with two free throws and a jumper to pull the Sagehens within nine with 2:03 remaining. Pomona-Pitzer took five of the next nine points thanks to five-straight from Madison Quan as she made a jumper and later made three free throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt. After the Bulldogs made one of two free throws with 48 seconds on the clock, Charlzie Andaya hit a three to pull the Sagehens within six at 75-69. The Bulldogs missed three of four free throws before Amara Chidom hit a corner three, just the second of her career, cutting the lead 76-72 with 24 seconds on the clock. The Sagehens had two late turnovers and the Bulldogs made four final free throws to take the 80-72 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
