Box Score THOUSAND, OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team got back on the hardwood for the first time since December 8th and came away with a 71-57 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran on Monday night at Gilbert Arena.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had five players in double-digits. Leading the way was Charlize Andaya who netted a career-high 16 points in the win. Madison Quan and Kaitlyn Leung contributed with 13 points each while Allison Murphy and Vanessa Hsia each added 10.
The Sagehens shot 41.4% from the floor and 31.3% from three while the defense limited Cal Lutheran to just 35% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc. The Sagehens also won the rebound battle 42-37, outscored the Regals in the paint 32-26 and forced the Regals to turn the ball over 23 times.
The Sagehens got out to an early lead in the first quarter and jumped out to an 11-3 lead after a Quan three-pointer with 4:41 left to go in the first. The Sagehens' offense had a good shooting quarter connecting on 46.7% of their shots from the field as they took a 17-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer grew their lead to over 10 points early in the second after a Leung three made it 20-9, but the Regals started to chip away at the lead and cut it down to 22-18 with 6:42 left before halftime. The Regals eventually overcame the early deficit and took their first lead of the game at 29-28 with 2:18 before halftime, but the Sagehens regrouped and got back on top 32-29 heading into the locker room.
The Sagehens came out in the third and had their best scoring quarter of the game with 20 points; however, the Regals matched the Sagehens' total with 20 of their own. The Sagehens kept the Regals away from the lead for the majority of the third and built a nine-point lead at 50-41 with 2:31 left in the third, but the Regals closed the gap yet again and hit a buzzer beater to narrow the lead down to 52-49 heading into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time growing the lead in the fourth as they quickly got back up to a nine-point cushion after a Quan layup with 6:02 left to play. Cal Lutheran rallied and got the lead down to just three points at 58-55, but the Sagehens' offense stayed strong late and carried Pomona-Pitzer to a big win on the road.
